About Us

The Somerset Ornithological Society is an organisation whose aims are:

  • To further the study of birds
  • To assist in their preservation

It's as simple as that! The main ways in which we do this are the production of an annual bird report, Somerset Birds, and the organisation of a series of walks and talks.

Producing Somerset Birds is no mean feat. The report has grown from a simple list of birds seen annually, to a glossy document, several hundred pages long. Our 2006 report included many colour photographs, line drawings, distribution maps and graphs describing the birds that occurred during the year.

Our walks are usually led by local birders who know the area and its birds well. The venues vary, but as we're so lucky to have such a range of top birding sites in the county, there's not much reason to travel far!

During the winter months the society arranges a programme of talks by a diverse range of speakers. We've had it all; from talks on birding expeditions to the other side of the planet, to an accounts of the birds that occur in a Somerset birders garden!

If you've read this far and you're still with us your next stop is to join us by clicking here.
